3 tips to boost team engagement

Maintaining, or even creating, team engagement is a topic that comes up frequently with our coaching clients. Keeping your team engaged is like finding the holy grail of managing people – it makes everything run smoother, from productivity to creativity. So, how do you get everyone on board and enthused about their work? Here are three tips to boost team engagement that you can start using right now.

1. Make Communication a Two-Way Street

Communication is key. It’s not just about you giving instructions and updates; it’s about creating a dialogue. Encourage your team to speak up, share ideas, and give feedback. When people feel heard, they’re more likely to be invested in what they’re doing. Set an expectation that team members need to contribute too.

- Regular Check-Ins: Ensure you have regular one-to-one meetings with your team members and that these meetings actually take place. This gives them a chance to voice any concerns, share their progress, and discuss their career goals. It’s a great way to show that you’re interested in their personal development, not just task delivery or performance.

  - Open-Door Policy: Literally or metaphorically, make yourself approachable. Let your team know that they can come to you to discuss work, whether it’s a new idea or a problem they’re facing. This openness can build trust and make people feel valued.

2. Create Opportunities for Growth

Nobody likes feeling stuck in a rut. If your team sees a clear path for advancement and personal development, they’re more likely to stay engaged and motivated. It’s the “what’s in it for me?” question.

- Training and Development: Invest in your team’s growth by providing opportunities for learning. This could be through workshops, courses, or even just setting aside time for skill-building activities. When people feel like they’re growing, they’re more likely to be enthusiastic about their work.

- Challenging Projects: Don’t be afraid to give your team members challenging assignments that push their limits. It shows that you trust their capabilities and potential, and want to see them succeed. Plus, it keeps things interesting and can prevent the monotony that often leads to disengagement.

 3. Celebrate Success

Everyone likes to be recognised for their hard work, so make it a habit to celebrate successes, no matter how small they might seem.

 - Public Recognition: When someone does a great job, this might mean giving them a shout-out in a team meeting or in an email. Public recognition can boost morale and motivate others to step up their game as well, but remember that not everyone likes a public fuss, so be sure to understand the individuals in your team.

 - Rewards and Incentives: Consider implementing a rewards system. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant – even small tokens of appreciation like gift cards, an extra day off, or a fun team outing can make a big difference. It shows that you appreciate their effort and are willing to go the extra mile to keep them happy.

Keeping your team engaged is all about showing that you value them. Be open and communicative, provide opportunities for growth, and celebrate their successes. When people feel valued and see a clear path ahead, they’re much more likely to stay motivated and invested in their work.
